If you are a fan of LEGO, the coming year is going to be filled with amazing new sets to snag for your brick collection

As we walk our way into 2016 we’re getting a really good look at a mix of LEGO sets we cannot wait to start building (and collecting) over the course of the coming year. As the LEGO brand continues to expand and add more and more diversity to reach the widest audiences ever, it’s clear to me that this is a startlingly fun time to be an AFOL (Adult Fan Of LEGO.)

I don’t know about you, but I love seeing the kids in my family get new LEGO sets for Christmas or birthdays. It makes for a perfect excuse for me to sit at their side and build my way back to my younger years for hours on end. Honestly, some of these next five sets so hit home for me, I would be seeking them out, kids or no kids.

1) 75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters

Who you gonna call when you open this LEGO set? The answer is everyone you know so you can brag that you now own one of the most staggeringly detailed Ghostbusters sets produced to date. At first glance at the building, you might be a bit dismissive, but when you look at the level of creativity present inside, how can you not be amazed? Seriously, I included the expanded graphic above just so you could see what all this set includes. Yes, it’s priced at just under $350, but I’d sell a couple proton packs if I had to just to add this beauty to my collection. All you need to add to this setup is the Ecto-1 and Ecto-2, and you have a LEGO matchup even Zuul would approve of!

2) 76052 Batman Classic TV Series Batcave

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a comic books guy at heart and some of my earliest memories as a kid were drinking in the reruns of the wonderfully campy Batman television series. Add to that the fact that the series celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in January, and you have a LEGO set that was just made to take me back to the Biff! Bam! Pow! era of the caped crusader.

Here we get the best bits of both Wayne Manor and the Batcave, complete with classic characters, a Batcopter, and even a Batmobile. That said, it’s the attention to detail that has me really excited here. From the Beethoven bust to the much used red phone to the poles (which look designed to spin the characters as they slide down), this set has everything I could want. Adding those little hanging bats to increase the atmosphere and it’s just about Bat-perfect!

3) 76057 Spider-Man Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge

It may still only be in the early unveil phase (hitting the streets in August of 2016), but this is the Marvel Spider-Man set I’ve been looking for! Just for starters Scorpion, Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, Aunt May, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and the Scarlet Spider are all included. WOW!

Seriously, the death of Gwen Stacey is one of the more iconic moments in Spider-Man’s very storied history, and this set just begs fans to find a Gwen and start tossing her off the top. I mean, they’ve already rolled in Spidey and the Goblin. You’re over 66% of the way there, and the bridge itself looks magnificent. Everything else can just be a bonus as this one has it all, right down to the webs and kooky villain flag at the top. Web it my way at your earliest convenience!

4) 75157 Captain Rex’s AT-TE Walker

I may be a little late to the Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars animated bandwagons, but I’ve been catching up quickly and devouring both series. I love seeing LEGO covering the entire Star Wars universe, and this new AT-TE just blew me away. Captain Rex, Commander Wolffe, and Gregor are included along with a Stormtrooper and an Imperial Inquisitor Fifth Brother.

For an individual hanging on every Star Wars reveal these days, this one promises not to disappoint in the summer of 2016. If for no other reason that the Inquisitor, waste no time walking this one my way!

5) LEGO Nexo Knights

Yes, I’m including the entire Nexo Knights line here because, quite honestly, I love everything I’m seeing unveiled this year. Expanding on its established tentpole properties like Chima and Ninjago, LEGO has grown in a new direction beginning at the top of 2016. Nexo Knights are a mashup of medieval weapons and castles smashed into futuristic technology. Castles with tank wheels? Knights donning power armor? Cybernetic steeds? What’s not to love? Sign me up!

6) 30604 Cosmic Boy

For number 6 on this list, I am going to be totally selfish and celebrate an addition to the LEGO universe that I can’t believe they’re making, and that I feel more dedication to buy than anything I’ve mentioned so far. That is the brand’s hat tip to the Legion of Super-Heroes that is Cosmic Boy. Announced for a 2016 release, he’s also going to be a bonus figure within the Justice League Cosmic Clash LEGO film arriving on March 1st.

Why is this such a big thing for me as a collector? For much of my comic book collecting life I was a massive Legion fan, not just because I loved the characters, but because so few other people seemed interested in them. As a collector at heart, I went after Legion comics because they were actually hard to find. If action figures can have peg warmers, comics have their box warmers, and Legion series often fit that bill. In an age when anything can be nabbed with a mouse click and a wad of cash, the Legion of Super-Heroes still proved a challenge to find, and it was a challenge I gladly accepted (and enjoyed.) I take great pride in the fact that I own almost every appearance of the Legion of Super-Heroes in comics. They may not be the Avengers, but for my collection the Legion stands assembled and this LEGO made me smile!
